The LRC Handbook

The ABC's Of Using The LRC

Been out of school for awhile?  Never much cared for using a library?  Feel lost as soon as you walk through the front door?  Relax!  Using this library may be easier than you ever imagined!  Just try this approach:

  • Read this handbook.
  • Tour the library to study its physical layout.
  • Examine the call numbers on the books to determine which classification system is being used for arranging library materials.
  • Familiarize yourself with the locations of the library's various collections and with the circulation status of each.
  • Take a look at the Library of Congress Subject Headings manuals and develop a habit of consulting these manuals for finding proper search terms.
  • Examine the help screens available in LINCCWeb.
  • Try locating information using several different access points, such as author, title, or subject.
  • Ask questions when you need help!

That is about all there is to using a library well.  The real key is to keep practicing until your library research skills become second nature.  For more information on this topic, try using the subject heading LIBRARIES - HANDBOOKS, MANUALS, ETC. Consider also enrolling in the LRC's self-paced Course on Library Skills.
